The Detroit Tigers enter Wednesday’s crucial Game 2 against the Houston Astros one win away from breaking into the MLB playoffs.

The Tigers are up 1-0 heading into Game 2 of the AL wild-card series at Minute Maid Park in Houston. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game 1 and then held on thanks to a near shutdown performance by Tarik Skubal and the bullpen to win 3-1.

Leaning on what got Detroit to the playoffs, manager AJ Hinch rolled with Tyler Holton as the opener and the bullpen for Game 2. Holton pitched one inning before being replaced by Brenan Hanifee, who lasted 1⅔ innings before giving way to Brant Hurter out of the playoffs. the bullpen. Hurter threw 1⅔ innings before Beau Brieske came in during the fifth inning.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Parker Meadows. Meadows turned on an inside fastball and snuck it inside the foul pole to open the inning and give the Tigers the lead.

Houston started Detroit native (Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores) and Wayne State graduate Hunter Brown in Game 2. Brown, a right-handed pitcher, was 11-9 with a 3-49 ERA in 30 starts. Brown was pulled after 5⅔ innings after giving up Meadows’ home run, but shut down the Tigers until that point, holding them to two hits with nine strikeouts.

The Tigers’ x-factor is coming to the fore again. Parker Meadows turned on an inside fastball from Hunter Brown and sent it 350 feet down the right field line over the fence to give the Tigers their first lead of the game. It was only the Tigers’ second goal, but it was powerful enough for the lead.

Brieske retired the Astros on short notice after walking Yordan Alvarez to start the inning. Alex Bregman lined to left field, then Yainer Diaz grounded into an inning-ending double play at short stop.

Brant Hurter gave up a single and was replaced by Beau Brieske on a fielder’s choice. Brieske got Jose Altuve to fly out on the first pitch and struck out Kyle Tucker with a perfectly placed 99 mph fastball to the outside corner, stranding Chas McCormick at second.

Trey Sweeney reached on a walk for Detroit and advanced to second on a steal, but Jake Rogers couldn’t drive him in and struck out on an outside slider.

The Tigers started in 1-2-3 order through Hunder Brown for a third inning from four attempts.

Brant Hurter put two on base with one out with a single and hit a batter, but got Jeremy Pena to ground into an inning-ending double play against Trey Sweeney at shortstop.

The Tigers struggle with Brown’s mix of sinker, volatility and curveball. He closed the top of the third striking out Parker Meadows and Kerry Carpenter and struck out five in the first three innings.

The Tigers’ pitching chaos continued in the second half. Brenan Hanifee retired the first two batters, including striking out Jose Altuve, then Hinch went to Brant Hurter to face left-handers Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez. After a walk, he got a grounder from Alvarez.

Hunter Brown appeared to cut through the middle of the Tigers’ lineup, but Spencer Torkelson reached on a Jose Altuve throwing error with two outs to keep the inning alive. Zach McKinstry followed with a double to left-center to put runners on second and third base, but Trey Sweeney ended the inning with a groundout.

In the bottom of the second inning, Hinch already went to the bullpen and had Brenan Hanifee as the first reliever. Hanifee gave up a lead-off single to Alex Bregman, but then seemed to settle for two quick outs. But he walked Jeremy Pena to put up two, then had an eight-pitch affair with Jason Heyward. Heyward hit two on the screws, but fouled them and Heyward ended the at bat with a strikeout on a high fastball.

The Tigers’ first two batters, Parker Meadows and Kerry Carpenter, made fair contact, but recorded a lineout and a flyout, before Matt Vierling struck out and went searching.

Tyler Holton got Jose Altuve to ground out to third on a nice play by Zach McKinstry, struck out Kyle Tucker with an inside sinker on the hands, and then got Yordan Alvarez to roll a sweeper to second base for a to end a seven-pitch at-bat. .

The Tigers are hosting another viewing party for local Detroit fans at Comerica Park. Yesterday, fans gathered to watch the Game 1 victory.

Detroit Tigers vs. Pregame Comments Houston Astros

The Tigers will have most of their pitching at their disposal after Skubal’s strong start lifted them to victory on Tuesday. After Holton, the entire bullpen outside of Will Vest, who threw a scoreless 1⅔ innings in relief yesterday, should probably be available.

The Tigers also get to go to their favorite lineup at the plate against the right-handed Brown. Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith, who both came off the bench in Game 1 as pinch hitters to avoid Framber Valdez, are back in the lineup and spark plug Kerry Carpenter returns to the leadoff spot.

The Astros bats were quiet for eight innings in Game 1, but woke up late and delivered a terrifying shock to the hearts of all Michigan. Houston couldn’t capitalize with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but was one missed pitch by Beau Brieske or a slip-up by Spencer Torkelson after a dramatic walk-off win.

The Tigers will have two chances today and tomorrow (if necessary) to close out the best-of-three wild card series to advance to the ALDS and face the Cleveland Guardians. However, Houston is no stranger to tough moments in October, and these young Tigers will need to close out their first playoff series. The Astros are looking to maintain their streak of reaching an eighth straight AL championship series.
