Thousands of Bank of America customers reported problems accessing their bank accounts Wednesday afternoon as the financial institution suffered a widespread outage.

On social media, customers said they couldn’t see their account balance. Those who were able to view their accounts said they had an alarming balance of $0.

Many experienced a ‘Connection Error’ message while trying to log into the banking app. The message said it “couldn’t complete your request” and asked the user to “try again later.”

As of 1:15 p.m. Eastern Time, nearly 20,000 customers said they were experiencing problems, according to Downdetector, which reports internet outages. That number dropped before rising again around 2:45 PM ET.

It is unclear what caused the outage. The independent has asked Bank of America for more information about the incident.

Customers experiencing the outage flocked to social media platforms, such as X and Reddit, to confirm they were experiencing similar issues.

Many reported experiencing difficulty reaching Bank of America customer service.

Bank of America suffered a disruption last summer when CrowdStrike, the global cybersecurity company, suffered a massive crash due to a flawed update.
