Commanders kicker Austin Seibert was choked after missing an extra point in Sunday’s last-minute 34-26 loss to the NFC East rival Cowboys.

“I just want to play better for my teammates. I absolutely don’t want to do that,” a tearful Seibert said in the locker room after Washington’s third straight loss. “It just wasn’t good, but it means a lot to me to be here with these guys, so I just want to put my best foot forward.”

With 21 seconds left and Washington trailing by seven, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels connected with wideout Terry McLaurin on a miraculous 86-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-26.

Seibert, who has missed the past two games with a right hip injury, then missed the extra point that would have tied the game and put his hands on his helmet in disbelief.

Seibert had also previously missed an extra point after Washington took a 9-3 lead in the third quarter. Seibert also missed a 51-yard field goal in the first quarter with Washington ahead, 3–0.

Cowboys safety Juanyeh Thomas put the game away for Dallas moments after Seibert’s second missed extra point when he returned the onside kick 43 yards for a touchdown with 14 seconds left, ending Dallas’ five-game losing streak.

Seibert took responsibility when asked about the low snap before missing the extra point.

“(The snap) made no difference at all. It’s up to me,” he said.

Commandants coach Dan Quinn, who seemed shocked after the miss, didn’t like going for two at the time.

The Commanders (7-5) host the Tennessee Titans (3-8) on Dec. 1 before Washington’s bye week.
