Bayern Munich beats PSG and takes the clean sheet for the seventh time in a row

Bayern Munich are back on course to qualify directly for the last 16 of the Champions League after an impressive 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain at home to the Allianz Arena. Min-Jae Kim scored the winning goal (38′) after a mistake by PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

It was Bayern Munich’s third 1-0 win in three of the last four games. At first glance it is not that dominant. But Bayern had 57% possession and an 85% success rate, compared to PSG’s 79%.

In other words: although on paper it was a poor result. Just like against Benfica and St. Pauli, Bayern never really seemed in danger of losing the match against the Ligue 1 giants.

“I’m obviously happy,” Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany told Amazon Prime after the match. “Our pressure in the first half was very good. The discipline was there. We could have maybe scored one or two more goals, but the result is good.”

Manuel Neuer was also happy. The Bayern captain came under fire earlier this season for his apparent form error and has now led his side to seven clean sheets in all competitions.

“It comes down to our mentality and the confidence, not just from the backline, but from the whole team,” Neuer said when asked about his performance. “The attacking players are just as happy with a 1-0 win and a clean sheet. This mentality and focus on every defensive action sets us apart at the moment.”

Without a doubt, almost every part of this Bayern team looks sharp. There was even an excellent moment when Neuer acted as a playmaker on the halfway line, creating a good scoring opportunity for his side.

That moment was perhaps one of the few times Bayern fans in the Allianz Arena came close to fear. Furthermore, the back line was incredibly solid. And that is an astonishing achievement by Kompany, who inherited two defenders who were completely out of shape in Kim and Dayot Upamecano.

A few weeks ago, Neuer, Upamecano and Kim staggered aimlessly around the pitch in a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Barcelona. Kompany drew the right conclusions from that match and has now found a system that provides good guidance to Kim and Upamecano.

The Belgian coach always believed in his two central defenders. “I saw the training the first week and it was not nice for our attackers,” Kompany said. “And if it’s not fun for the attackers in training, then you know you have something there.”

So if the potential was always there, what did it take to get them going again? The performance that is always accompanied by a little trust and time,” says Kompany. “Of course they don’t just defend. Harry Kane is involved; everyone participates and that is why it is so successful now.”

Those are the positives. But there is no denying that despite all the dominance, scoring has been difficult lately. Kane’s form in big games in particular is starting to become a concern for the club as the Englishman disappeared again against a top opponent.

It’s not just Kane either. Michael Olise appeared to have hit a wall since his spectacular start after first joining the club from Crystal Palace this summer. The only player who consistently plays at the highest level is Jamal Musiala, on whom Bayern has become increasingly dependent.

There is now a feeling that Bayern will add to their attack in the January window. But until then, Kompany would not manage to find a solution to his stuttering attack. After all, he solved everything else.
