Big Ten confirms Oregon has clinched its spot in the title game

In its first season as a member of the Big Ten, Oregon has officially clinched a spot in the conference title game — on a Tuesday.

The Ducks, No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings prior to Tuesday night’s update, appeared to have clinched a championship spot when they defeated Wisconsin on Saturday to move to 11-0 on the season and 8-0 in conference play. However, the Big Ten did not confirm this until Tuesday afternoon.

“After an extensive review of all possible scenarios over the final two weeks of the regular season for all 18 teams, the Big Ten Conference has determined that there are no conditions that would prevent the Ducks from finishing No. 1 or No. 2 (in the league) ”, the conference said in a press release.

The conference also released a separate document detailing the ten tiebreaker scenarios that could occur during the remaining matches. The three teams competing for the other spot in the title game are Indiana (7-0 in conference play), Ohio State (6-1, with the only loss to Oregon) and Penn State (6-1, with the only loss to state of Ohio). Each of these teams has two conference games remaining, with Ohio State and Indiana facing off this weekend.

In eight of the 10 tiebreaker scenarios, Oregon would face either Indiana or Ohio State in a rematch of their thrilling matchup in October, which the Ducks won 32-31. If the Hoosiers beat the Buckeyes, they’ll be on their way to the title game, even if they lose to Purdue the following week. If the Buckeyes beat the Hoosiers, they are in unless they lose to Michigan in the season finale.

The only way Penn State could meet Oregon in the title game is if the Nittany Lions win, Indiana loses to Ohio State and Purdue, while the Buckeyes lose to Michigan, or Indiana loses to Ohio State, beats Purdue, and the cumulative winning percentage of the conference all conference opponents for Penn State are higher than Indiana’s (provided Ohio State still loses to Michigan).

Oregon has a bye this week and then takes on Washington on November 30 in the final game of the regular season, as the Ducks attempt to record an undefeated regular season for the second time in program history (2010). If Oregon beats Washington, it will also clinch an outright No. 1 seed in the title game.

The Big Ten title game takes place on December 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
