Add Bomani Jones to the list of sports commentators growing tired of the modern NBA.

After an opening week in which the Boston Celtics tied the record for most three-pointers in a game and 2024 breakout star Anthony Edwards averaged 13 attempts per game from deep, Jones is yet another sports media veteran sounding the alarm.

“It has actually become the injection. Every boxer has a jab,” Jones said of the three-point shot. “But (the three-point shot) shouldn’t be a jab. It feels like it should be an uppercut, an option, something you have.

After Nick Wright warned the NBA last week that the modern style of the game is not “sustainable” and is old Boston sphere columnist Bob Ryan once again railed against the overuse of the long bomb, Jones tried to remind his audience and the league that nothing is sacred.

Jones explained The rules and styles of a sport should be based on what is most compelling, not on teams finding the boundaries to dominate. The right moment The host illustrated his point by using DeMar DeRozan, a longtime midrange killer.

“Hoopers talk about (DeRozan) very differently than the people watching because we look at it in terms of numbers. But at the end of the day, we watch basketball because it’s fun to watch,” Jones said.

“And DeMar DeRozan is fun to watch. I like watching artists. And this current style of play, which I think people misunderstand, is that the rules encourage certain styles. So people are going to do that. Styles create battles, and usually you have to bend the rules a bit and then encourage people to play in many different ways. There aren’t too many guys that I think about, where I’m at, I love their game.

In addition to a nice midrange game from a player like DeRozan, Jones pointed to post-play and creative drives to the basket as other skills from the past in today’s NBA. The influx of statistical analysis into the league gradually changed the style of players to focus beyond the arc.

“We enjoy those things, but three is so much more than two that everyone stands out there,” Jones said. “And next thing you know… Anthony Edwards has hit 13 threes per game so far this year.”

Last NBA season, rest and load management were the focus. The league instituted minimums for the number of games played, and players performed the All-Star game so slowly that it even drove commissioner Adam Silver to exhaustion.

This year, the perimeter-oriented style emulated in the league will be a central talking point. It’s not just Edwards or Boston embracing that shot. Every player and team is. Games are won and lost simply because of a team’s ability to take and make the required number of threes to keep up with their opponents.

That makes for quite repetitive matches and moments during the regular season.

Jones isn’t the only one who’s had enough.
