Boston feud as band members fight during Jane’s Addiction reunion show | Jane’s Addiction

In the scene from Back to the Future where Michael J Fox plays Johnny B Goode on stage and gets so into the music that he knocks over his own amplifier, a shocked and disapproving silence falls over the room.

A similar silence descended on the audience at a Boston show on Friday night when Perry Farrell — also known as the “godfather of alternative music” — fist-bumped guitarist Dave Navarro during a song and then, clearly enraged, stood in front of him and punched him again, sending Navarro flying.

Farrell had to be physically restrained by crew members after the brawl and was pushed off stage when fans began booing. Minutes later, the house lights came up and the show was over.

The incident between the two veteran band members, which seemed to catch Navarro by surprise, was captured on camera by the audience from several angles.

On social media, fans who attended the show to see the recently reunited Jane’s Addiction on tour reported that the “trouble” began during an earlier song, when Perry allegedly yelled at Navarro. Witnesses said the yelling continued throughout the set, which one fan noted was a song ironically titled Summertime Rolls.

On X, a videographer who said he attended the show tweeted that Perry “had a large bottle of wine with him all night.”

Farrell, 65, began his career in the 1980s with American post-punk band Psi Com, before becoming lead singer of Jane’s Addiction.

The band, which created its own unique blend of psychedelic rock, punk and heavy metal music, broke up acrimoniously in 1991. For years, founding member Eric Avery repeatedly refused to participate in reunion tours, but after a 12-year hiatus, he rejoined the band in 2022. However, Navarro, now 57, was unable to participate in the band’s reunion tour that year and last year due to prolonged Covid.

The band finally reunited in early May of this year for their first performance in 14 years, in the middle of a long US tour.

Earlier this week, tensions appeared to be brewing between the band members in New York City, when the band performed two nights at The Rooftop at Pier 17, NME reported.

Farrell reportedly told the crowd at Pier 17 that his voice was not in top condition. “Ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you. There’s something wrong with my voice. I can’t get the notes out of it,” he said.

Bassist Eric Avery later acknowledged the underperformance in New York in an Instagram post, writing, “I’m looking forward to another chance tonight at this spectacular rooftop venue. I’m optimistic we’ll be better.”
