Boston is coming off consecutive shutout wins

BOSTON – The Bruins defeated the Seattle Kraken 2-0 at TD Garden on Sunday night after eliminating the Philadelphia Flyers on the road by the same score the day before.

The games had similarities that Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery wasn’t exactly happy with, but he saw his team playing more towards their identity in the two games.

“I liked our first period, not our second, which was very similar to the Flyers game,” he said. “I like the effort of blocking shots. I like us staying together, (Trent Frederic) tonight and defending (Matthew) Poitras. How we stayed together at the end of the game against the Flyers last night.

“You saw us coming together. We protect the slot. We sacrifice ourselves for each other, and that’s a start. Our execution still needs to grow. Our maturity as a team in terms of game management still needs to grow. We are now in a winning game zone. You don’t give up goals and your goalkeepers pay just as well as we do. It’s a good step. We are going in the right direction. November was much better than October.”

Charlie Coyle in particular had an excellent game for the Bruins, and Montgomery was quick to praise the forward’s efforts over the weekend.

‘I think Charlie Coyle has been moving his feet the last two nights. When he moves his feet, he creates turnovers and brings pucks to the net,” Montgomery said. “Like that penalty play where he ended up on a partial breakaway. He went through two people, and it was like he had a silverback gorilla on his back, and he just kept going. That is the effort and the kind of perseverance we want in our group.”

Coyle had an absolutely beautiful goal on the power play to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the first period for his second tally of the season.

“It was a great look from (Brad Marchand). Me and (David Pastrnak) switched around a little bit,” Coyle explained. “(If Pastranak) is in the middle, he will bring a lot of guys (to him). I don’t think they’re too worried about me and Marchy found me. … It was a great look from Marchy, the power play move, Pasta, who probably doesn’t get a point on that, but he takes two or three guys because they’re all focused on him and he’s a big part of that play. ”

— David Pastrnak didn’t play a single shift in the third period of the Black and Gold’s win over the Kraken.

“Coach’s decision, third period,” Montgomery said after the game. “That’s all I’m going to say about it.”

– Boston recorded shutouts in back-to-back regular-season games for the first time since 2011, as they defeated the New York Islanders and Montreal Canadiens in succession. It was the first time the Bruins recorded shutouts in back-to-back games since 2008 against the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks.

— The Bruins penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, while the power play was only able to take advantage of one of Seattle’s five fouls.

— The Bruins and NESN honored longtime voice of the franchise Jack Edwards during a pregame ceremony, unveiling a booth dedication featuring Edwards’ signature line: “From high above the ice….”

Boston will look to extend its win streak to three games when the club heads north of the border to Toronto in an Original Six matchup with the Leafs on Tuesday night. Puck drop from Scotiabank Arena is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. You can watch the game, plus an hour of pre-game coverage on NESN.
