Bot didn’t get much: US mayoral candidate who promised to govern with AI loses race | Wyoming

A Wyoming mayoral candidate who proposed letting an artificial intelligence bot run local government lost his race Tuesday — by a wide margin.

The candidate, Victor Miller, announced earlier this year that he was running for mayor of Cheyenne and quickly made headlines when he decided to run with his customized ChatGPT bot, called Vic (Virtual Integrated Citizen), on the campaign trail. He also announced that he wanted to govern in a hybrid form, a first for American political campaigns, according to experts.

Before Tuesday’s election, the AI bot told Your Wyoming Link its role within the government would be to provide data-driven insights and innovative solutions for Cheyenne, while Miller would serve as the official mayor if elected by voters and ensure “all actions are carried out legally and practically.”

But in the end, Miller and his bot received only 327 of the 11,036 votes cast.

On Tuesday night, Miller conceded the race, saying in a statement that the campaign was not about him as a candidate but about “providing a groundbreaking option to voters: the chance to elect an AI to make 100% of the decisions in office.”

He added that his role was “merely as the necessary human interface to get this new form of intelligence to the ballot box, as current laws do not allow AI to function independently”.

Despite his lackluster voter turnout, Miller said of his bot partnership: “The seeds of a revolution in governance have been planted and are already beginning to germinate.”
