Bruins coach ecstatic after Bruins’ upset victory at homecoming

The UCLA Bruins (4-5) are now on a three-game win streak and are just two wins away from becoming bowl eligible following their 20-17 comeback against the Iowa Hawkeyes (6-4). First-year head coach DeShaun turned this program around midway through the season.

After falling 10-0 to start the ball game, the Bruins picked up 17 unanswered points and in a late tie, they kicked the go-ahead field goal with just under five minutes left. They would hang on for the three-point victory on Homecoming Night.

The Bruins’ first priority to beat the Hawkeyes was limiting junior running back Kaleb Johnson, the conference’s leading rusher and second nationwide in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. The defense held Johnson to just 49 yards rushing on 18 carries.

“(We) played a good game, came out, executed, really wanted to stop the run, and we did that,” Foster said after the game. “Offensively we were able to run the ball, we had a few turnovers, but we can work on that. But it was a really good team we played against, so it was just good that we were able to protect our home court.” and achieve a victory. I just like how resilient my boys are. We always show how resilient we are every week. You see the way they come out, they practice really hard, and we just came out and really executed the way we wanted to.”

Before Friday evening, the Bruins were leading 0-4 at home this season. They changed that with them biggest win of the season in front of their home crowd at the Rose Bowl. Foster entered his postgame presser with the game ball under his arm. This match meant a lot to him as a former player.

“I didn’t want to focus too much on the fact that we’re back home, but we kind of treated this game like a road game,” Foster said. “I just think my guys came out and earned the right to win. Just the way they practiced this week and I think as long as we continue to do that, this team can really take off.”

There’s something to be said about how Foster turned this team around midway through the season. After a 1-5 start where they competed against four nationally ranked teams, it was the adversity they faced early on that made them so successful against another good team.

Foster mentioned the turning point in the season and how this team has stayed the course and battles daily to achieve its ultimate goal: winning.

“It’s a couple things, just the way they practice, Sunday and Monday — after those losses it was tough,” Foster said. “I really think our season changed after Minnesota. That was exactly the kind of loss that bothered the players. They were able to channel it the right way and really come out and really pay attention to details and sacrifices.” just a little bit more. I always knew we had the talent, and it was baby steps, and this is exactly where we are now.

Feeding has started his coaching stint as a Bruin with a 1-0 record in Homecoming games, earning his first win at his old stomping grounds. This team will become even more dangerous as the season progresses and could get some extra football over the holidays if it wins two more.
