WNBA star Caitlin Clark hinted at her political leanings ahead of this year’s US election by liking a social media post by Taylor Swift endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. But when asked about it by reporters on Wednesday, she was reluctant to endorse any candidate.

On Tuesday, Swift put an end to speculation about whether she would endorse a particular candidate ahead of the November election, telling her followers on Instagram that she would be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

Clark was one of the more than 10 million people who liked the post, but she didn’t dare officially endorse Harris herself.

“I have this great platform, so I think the most important thing would be to encourage people to register to vote,” Clark told reporters on Wednesday when asked about her decision to like the post.

“That’s the best I can do with the platform I have, and that’s the same thing Taylor (Swift) did.

“Keep educating yourself about the candidates that we have, the policies that they support – I think that’s the most important thing you can do. And that’s what I would advise anyone who has the opportunity in our country to do.”

Since her remarkable college career led to the WNBA, Clark has faced the challenges that come with being a force to be reckoned with.

Earlier this year, the 22-year-old said it was “disappointing” to see people using her name to push their own agendas, especially when it comes to racism and misogyny.

However, this appears to be the first indication of Clark’s political preferences in the run-up to the presidential election.

The WNBA and its players have regularly engaged in social and political issues. During this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, the women’s basketball team Team USA emphasized their support for Harris’ presidential bid before winning gold in a dramatic final against France.

Female basketball players have also had influential voices in major elections before.

In 2020, the Atlanta Dream protested the team’s then-co-owner—then-Senator Kelly Loeffler, who was running for re-election against Reverend Raphael Warnock—over her opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement. That race ended in a runoff, with Warnock defeating Loeffler. He is now a senator for Georgia.
