Cam Ward made a great debut for Miami on Saturday.

The transfer from Washington State was dominant as the No. 19 Hurricanes dominated Florida in the Swamp. He had 321 passing yards and three touchdowns on 24 of 32 passing, while also picking up 33 rushing yards on just three carries.

Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press noted that Ward’s performance marked the first time since 1979 that a Miami quarterback threw for more than 300 yards in his debut.

Miami led 38-10 at the end of the third quarter, the most points Florida has ever allowed in a home game.

After Ward’s outstanding play, he was hailed by American football fans as an early candidate for the Heisman Award.

Cam Ward will win the Heisman

Those who followed the Pac-12 and Washington State a season ago probably weren’t surprised by Ward’s performance on Saturday. Last season for the Cougars, he had 3,735 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, while also picking up eight touchdowns on the ground.

In his first season with Incarnate Word, he put up stats comparable to those in a video game, rushing for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns.

It will be tough to build a routine for games like Saturday’s, but if Ward can do that, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s nominated for the Heisman Trophy in December.
