The CBI had registered a case alleging financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered on August 9.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday raided the residence of former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh in Kolkata in connection with a corruption probe.

This development comes a day after the CBI registered a case of alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered on August 9.

The agency took over the investigation from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the West Bengal government. directions of Calcutta High Court.

The Supreme Court, which had already transferred the probe into the doctor’s rape and murder, also transferred the probe into financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of former director Dr Sandip Ghosh to the CBI “in the interest of a comprehensive and impartial investigation”.

The court had passed the order on the request of Dr Akhtar Ali, who was the deputy director of the hospital until 2023.

Ali on Wednesday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into the alleged malpractices and financial scams that came to light during Ghosh’s tenure.

In his plea, Ali Ghosh has accused illegal use of unclaimed bodiesillegally selling biomedical waste and making tenders on the commission paid by suppliers of medicines and medical equipment. Ali has also alleged that students were being pressurized to pay amounts ranging from Rs.5 to 8 lakhs to pass the examinations.

“In July 2023, I filed a written complaint with the state vigilance commission but no action has been taken against Ghosh. I want everyone involved in the racket to be exposed,” Ali had said after filing the petition.

The medical college made headlines after the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor in a seminar hall on August 9. The main suspect, Sanjay Roy, a civilian volunteer working with the Kolkata Police, was arrested on August 10 and is currently in custody.
