NYPD Arrests Suspect in Murder of Famed ‘Upscale Crocc’ Sneakers Seller

Police arrested a man from upstate on Thursday in connection with the fatal shooting of the famous sneaker retailer “Upscale Cracc” in Soho last spring.

Jayquan Straker, 35, was charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Javier Osario-Mejia. Police at the time suspected it was a botched robbery. The Poughkeepsie resident also faces charges of robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Osario-Mejia was struck in the right thigh in June outside a high-end clothing store on Greene St., just off Grand St. Police sources said at the time that the wound was so severe that they were convinced he had been shot multiple times.

Officers and detectives from the New York Police Department’s 1st Precinct investigate the scene of a shooting next to a white Range Rover in front of 41 Greene Street in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood.

The noted sneaker enthusiast was about to open a new store on Houston St., according to a friend who spoke to the Daily News shortly after the shooting.

The friend, who called himself Andre, said Osario-Meija had a daughter whom he was raising in addition to his business, and described him as a “very active father.”

“This doesn’t feel random. It feels targeted. Everybody loved him,” André said at the time.

As of Saturday evening, there was still no clarity about the reason for Straker’s arrest, almost two months after his victim was killed.
