Chappell Roan tells photographer ‘shut up’ during 2024 VMAs

Chappell Roan wasn’t so nonchalant when it came to responding to photographers on the 2024 VMAs red carpet.

When the 26-year-old looked away from the flashing cameras as she attempted to show off her elaborate dress before taking photos, she quickly turned around and shouted, “Shut your f–k mouth!” at a photographer.

Roan continued to curse at the unseen paparazzi, pointing at herself with her extra-long nails and saying, “Not me.”

The singer wore a long brown dress with a thick cross necklace and her long, curly, fiery red hair was tied back.

This year, Roan has earned four nominations, in the categories of Best New Artist, Push Performance of the Year for “Red Wine Supernova,” Best Trending Video for “Hot To Go!” and Song Of Summer for “Good Luck, Babe!”

The rising star will also make her first appearance on the VMAs stage. Other performers expected to perform tonight include VMAs 2024 host Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter, Halsey, Karol G, Camila Cabello and Eminem.

On the red carpet, Roan took a moment to rave about her VMAs debut.

“Well, we have a theme — we always have a theme,” the artist said of her medieval look, before hinting to her fans: “I’m not going to give too much away, but I would say take notes. Take it all in and take some notes.”

And what does the star think of her first performance?

“I’m nervous,” Roan said. “There’s a lot of technical stuff going on that I’ve never experienced before, but we’ve practiced so much. I feel like this is the next step in my career, so I was like, ‘Damn, okay, it feels good to be here.'”

The singer joins a long list of superstars, including Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, who have won the coveted Best New Artist award, something she doesn’t take lightly.

“I’ve never won anything before, so that would be awesome. It’s going to be cool,” Roan confessed. “The thing I’m most nervous about is performing in front of my peers. Just looking out and seeing people that I’ve listened to forever and really looked up to, that’s the scary part, but it would be crazy to win.”

And if she goes home with a Moon Person, Ronan knows exactly who she’ll thank.

“My ex,” she admitted. “You’ve got me here. I’m really trying not to swear right now. I’m really trying to be quiet. It’s so hard! But I’m screaming my thank yous, but also thank yous to my ex, you know the classics.”

And despite her newfound celebrity status, Roan said last month that she doesn’t believe people have a “right” to meet her.

The “Hot To Go!” singer took a moment to talk about the pressures that come with fame in a new TikTok video.

“I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is normal to do to people who are famous or a little bit famous, whatever. I don’t care that it’s normal,” Roan told his followers.

She explained that it is normal for stars to accept “this kind of crazy behavior” from fans, but that it is “not yet okay” to do so.

“That doesn’t make it normal. That doesn’t mean I want it, that doesn’t mean I like it. I don’t want what the f——k you think you’re entitled to when you see a celebrity,” Roan shot back. “I don’t give a f——k if you think it’s selfish of me to say no to a picture or your time or a hug—– that’s not normal, that’s weird!”

“I’m allowed to say no to creepy behavior, okay?” she added.
