Chelsea predicted line-up vs. Newcastle United: Carabao Cup

Three days after their 2-1 win in the Premier League, Chelsea travel north to St. James’ Park for their second successive match against Newcastle United, this time in the Carabao Cup.

The Blues ended the Magpies’ Carabao Cup dream a season ago, advancing to the semi-finals on penalties at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea finished in the final at Wembley, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side were defeated by Liverpool in the final.

After Sunday’s victory, Enzo Maresca once again has all the players of the first team. Although his team was superior to Newcastle last time out, it would be a surprise if any player repeats himself in the starting XI.

Maresca has made a habit of completely rotating its squad, with a completely different XI in the competition to those in the Carabao Cup and UEFA Conference League.

GK: Filip Jörgensen—Maresca insists that despite his shaky moments, he is happy to have Robert Sánchez as the starter in the competition. Jörgensen has been solid in midweek matches and could soon push for that No. 1 spot in the EPL.

LB: Marc Cucurella—Reece James’ return to fitness has left Cucurella the odd man out in the competition. However, Malo Gusto has not lived up to his standards from last season and James’ health is never a guarantee, so the Spaniard could be back in the EPL line-up very soon.

CB: Tosin Adarabioyo—The former Fulham centre-back is a solid back-up. He returns to the XI after his up-and-down performance at Anfield a week and a half ago.

CB: Renato Veiga—Veiga’s versatility was already evident in his early days with the Blues, playing as a midfielder, wing-back and centre-back since his arrival. There is a lot to be excited about the 21-year-old.

RB: Axel Disasi—Mauricio Pochettino experimented and played Disasi as a wing-back until late in his Chelsea tenure. Disasi must be grateful, otherwise it is difficult to imagine how he would get minutes under Maresca if he does not offer James and Gusto a rest during the week.

CM: Enzo Fernández—Romeo Lavia continues to impress and has fully taken over the role of Moisés Caicedo’s midfield partner in the Premier League. Fernández looked good against Panathinaikos, finally playing deeper, rather than how he was used alongside Caicedo.

CM: Kieran Dewsbury-Hall—The former Leicester City player has not put a foot wrong since arriving in West London.

LW: Mychailo Mudryk—After a goal and two assists against Panathinaikos, Mudryk has looked sharper and more confident of late.

AM: João Félix—Félix is stuck behind Cole Palmer, which speaks to Chelsea’s deep squad. Félix scored a brace against Panathinaikos.

RW: Jadon Sancho—After a great start to his Chelsea career, Sancho has not played a minute in the Blues’ last two games. Pedro Neto was brilliant this weekend and seems to have taken over the starting role in the competition for the time being.

ST: Christopher Nkunku—Nkunku will look to continue his run of goals in every midweek match Chelsea have played this season. He has already scored nine goals this season, but Nicolas Jackson’s strong form has seen him play just 153 minutes in the Premier League so far.
