Chinese Swifties are angry with Elon Musk

It all started hours after the ABC primetime debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

Taylor Swiftafter the debate, gave Harris a resounding endorsement on Instagram. The pop star also signed the label “Childless Cat Lady” — a direct dig at controversial comments Sen. J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate, made about childless people.

That’s where Musk comes in. The Tesla and SpaceX boss went to X, the platform he owns, and posted a comment smearing Swift.

“Fine Taylor… you win… I will bear you a child and guard your cats with my life,” Musk wrote in an X message Wednesday morning.

The post — made in the afternoon, China time — did not go down well with Swifties in China. A hashtag discussing Musk’s comments about Swift reached the “hot search” charts on Weibo, the country’s version of X, with more than 15 million views at the time of writing.

And the Chinese Swifties didn’t hold back with their sharp criticism of Musk.

“What a ridiculous joke,” was a top comment on a Taylor Swift fan blog in Jiangsu. “’I will give you a child?’ Who wants children from you?”

“This is a beautiful woman. You have no respect for women,” read a post from another Taylor Swift blog in Tianjin. “Taylor is being criticized for no reason. I hope SpaceX rocket launches always fail.”

In other comments on Weibo, Musk was criticized for his physical appearance and for commenting on Swift’s life choices.

Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour did not have any shows scheduled in China. That said, Swift is no stranger to China. Her last public appearance in China was in 2019, when she appeared at Alibaba’s 11.11 Countdown Gala.

“You’ve always been so warm and supportive,” Swift told her Chinese fans during the performance.

Musk also has Chinese fans. When he visited the country in May 2023, he was given a warm welcome and the red carpet treatment, complete with a lavish 16-course meal.

Chinese social media was abuzz during Musk’s visit, with fans dubbing him “Brother Ma,” a play on Musk’s Chinese surname, which is spelled with the Chinese character for horse.

Musk and representatives for Swift did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment outside regular business hours.
