Colorado Gov. Jared Polis dismisses migrant gang’s takeover of Aurora apartments as ‘imagination’

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has dismissed anger over the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua taking over apartment buildings in the Denver suburb of Aurora, calling it “imagined” — despite video footage, police reports and the city’s mayor confirming it’s happening.

Polis’ press office made the sarcastic comment Wednesday night in response to Aurora City Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky, who told The Post that the gang’s takeovers are linked to his policies.

“The governor has already informed the mayor that the state is prepared to support local law enforcement with assistance from state troopers and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation if needed,” Shelby Wieman, a spokesman for the Democratic governor, told The Post.

“But according to police intelligence, this alleged invasion was largely a product of Danielle Jurinsky’s imagination.”

Wieman added that “it is illegal to take over buildings in Colorado” and if Jurinsky has “knowledge” of such activity, the governor’s office is “ready to assist” law enforcement “in taking them back.”

“Violent crime in Aurora decreased between 2022 and 2023,” Wieman said.

But despite the governor’s claims, the evidence is clear.

On Wednesday night, Fox Denver aired surveillance footage showing an armed gang of men — later confirmed by police as suspected members of Tren de Aragua — strolling through an apartment complex in Aurora that residents said had been overrun by the gang.

Three of the men were seen with handguns, while another held a rifle. They entered the apartment complex where there was trouble. Shortly after, a shooting broke out in the complex, seriously injuring one person.

Additionally, Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman told Fox News on Thursday that “there are several buildings” in his city “that have fallen into the hands of these Venezuelan gangs.”

Coffman believes the buildings were used as housing for migrants, funded by taxpayer money, which is how the gangs got a foothold.

Denver — a sanctuary city just west of Aurora — has received more migrants per capita than any other city in the country, most of them from Venezuela. More than 40,000 migrants have arrived since December 2022.

The Post asked Polis’ office if he plans to retract his statement given the mounting evidence of the Tren de Aragua takeover. Wieman responded that the governor “really hopes that the city council members in charge will stop destroying their own city, when they should be keeping it safe.”

“Over the past month, Governor Polis has been in regular contact with the City of Aurora and the Aurora Police Department and has offered all state resources to support their efforts if requested,” she said, adding that they expect violent crime to continue to decline.

The Post revealed that the gang had taken over apartments in Aurora and identified the area’s shot caller, Jhonardy Jose Pacheco-Chirino, who goes by “Galleta,” which means “cookie” in English.

Pacheco-Chirino and his fellow gangsters brutally beat a man in an apartment complex in Aurora.

He was later arrested and released on bail.

The investor in the apartments told the Post that the migrant gang has taken over the apartments.
One witness said she was “afraid to talk much because of the dangerous people living in the complex.”

During the attack, a witness said Pacheco-Chirino and his accomplices were “part of a gang that steals from Walmart” and claimed “they own” the apartment, according to a sworn statement obtained by The Post.

The apartment investor told The Post they lost control of several properties because the gang took over the units.

“They were hanging around the property at first and creating a bad element that is there all the time. And then they started taking over, a couple of months ago, they started taking over vacant units.”

In July, Pacheco-Chirino was arrested for a shooting at the same complex, which left two men injured.

Meanwhile, Polis has embraced Colorado’s asylum policy.

The governor has signed legislation in recent months to support their new lives in the state by making it easier for them to get a driver’s license, go to school and access taxpayer-funded resources.

When the influx of migrants became too great, Polis decided in 2023 to bus them to New York City. That program has since ended.

Still, many stayed, and some moved to nearby Aurora, population 390,000, where apartments are now under siege by the gang.

“It’s a nightmare and I can’t wait to get out of here,” apartment resident Cindy Romero told Fox Denver when she moved out of the building with her husband.

The gang, which originates from the Aragua region of Venezuela, has been sending its members across the U.S.-Mexico border for years and has expanded recruitment within the U.S. among immigrant communities, primarily in New York, Denver and Chicago.

The gang was recently designated a transnational criminal organization by the Biden administration.
