Columbus Marathon route to impact roads, bus routes

Tens of thousands of people, both participants and spectators, are expected to show up for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon & Half Marathon, which leaves North Bank Park on Sunday morning.

The crowd is likely to include many motorists looking for a parking spot in the area, so it’s a good idea to arrive early or reserve a parking spot in advance.

In addition to potential parking issues, motorists should be aware of numerous road closures this weekend due to the marathon.

Which streets will be closed?

There will be street closures throughout the weekend, starting at 9am on Friday, while Long Street from Hocking Street to Neil Avenue will be closed until 6pm on Sunday, except on Saturday from 5pm to 7pm for the Blue Jackets game.

The following streets are closed from Friday 11:59 PM to Sunday 6:00 PM:

  • Spring Street from West Street to Neil Avenue
  • Hanover and Cozzins streets, except for local traffic.
  • West Street from Nationwide Boulevard to Marconi Boulevard
  • John McConnell Boulevard from New Public Lane to Spring Street

Spring Street from Neil Avenue to Hocking Street is closed from 11:59 PM on Saturday to 6:00 PM on Sunday.

Neil Avenue south of Nationwide Boulevard will move to one lane for condo traffic from 11:59 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday. After 4 a.m., Neil Avenue south of Nationwide Boulevard is closed until 3 p.m. Sunday; condo traffic must use Nationwide’s rear entrance.

Beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, streets on the marathon route will be subject to rolling closures based on the expected arrival times of the first and last athletes. Spring Street, Long Street and Neil Avenue will reopen to traffic at 6 p.m

What impact will the bus routes have?

COTA expects major delays and diversions on Sunday, with at least 17 bus routes being diverted in the morning and early afternoon. Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 22, 31.102, CMAX and Zoo Bus will be affected.

Downtown transfer points are located at Spring Street and Long Street, near the intersection with Fourth Street.

Almost all transit stops in the city center are closed from 4 a.m. on Sunday. More than 800 stops will be closed at some point Sunday in Downtown, German Village, Bexley, North Bank, Arena District, Short North, Victorian Village, OSU, Grandview Heights and Upper Arlington.

All diversions end on Sunday afternoon after the marathon.
