Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler of Vanderbilt University arrested in Tennessee

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Former Chicago Bears and Vanderbilt University quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested Thursday evening.

Franklin police report that the 41-year-old former athlete was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision, implied consent and possession of a gun while intoxicated.

According to the arrest affidavit, the incident occurred Thursday around 5 p.m. when officers responded to the scene of an accident. The other party involved in the crash told dispatchers that the driver of the other vehicle struck him from behind and attempted to flee. The man says Cutler allegedly offered him $2,000 if he didn’t call the police.

Officers say they “observed Mr. Cutler staggering, staggering, and heavy-footed as he walked. I also noticed that he was slurring his words, slurring, and mumbling.”

The affidavit further explains that Cutler initially denied drinking alcohol, but eventually said he had drunk a small amount. Cutler refused a field sobriety test and denied experiencing a crash, the affidavit said. Police also found a loaded Glock pistol in the center console and a rifle in the back seat.
