Former President Donald Trump was elected to a second term on Wednesday, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris — and many wondered whether the president-elect could run for a third term in 2028.

Although two states remain to be declared, Trump has 295 electoral votes, while Harris has 226.

Here’s what you need to know about what’s next for Trump — and presidential term limits:

When will Donald Trump take office in 2025?

The inauguration is scheduled for Monday, January 20, 2025, at the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC

When does Donald Trump’s second term end?

The next presidential elections are scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, 2028. The next president will be sworn in on Saturday, January 20, 2029.

What does the Constitution say about presidential term limits?

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in February 1951, stipulates that a president can only hold office twice. Here’s part of it:

“No person may be elected President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President or acted as President for more than two years of a term for which another person has been elected President may be elected more than once elected president.”

Has a sitting president ever served more than two terms?

Yes. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd president, served from 1933 to 1945. Roosevelt won four terms and was the longest-serving president in American history.

According to the National Constitution Center, Roosevelt’s term ultimately led to the ratification of the 22nd Amendment.

Has a sitting president ever tried to run for more than two terms?

Several former presidents sought a third term before the 22nd Amendment: Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, and Theodore Roosevelt.

Has a president won non-consecutive elections?

Yes. Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th president of the US. He served first from 1885 to 1889 and later from 1893 to 1897.

Other presidents tried unsuccessfully to secure such terms. Trump is the only other president to have served a non-consecutive term.
