Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Addresses Week 10 QB Usage; No future starter decision made

The final decision is sought in terms of how Dak Prescott will continue to deal with his hamstring injury, the Cowboys must figure out who will start under center for the remainder of the campaign. There will be discussions about whether that is the case Cooper Rush will get the nod next week or be replaced by Trey Lance.

Rush played most of Sunday’s game — a blowout loss to the Eagles in which Dallas scored just two field goals — completing 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards. He also fumbled twice, something that contributed to the Cowboys’ overall turnover problem in the loss. The 30-year-old now has seven starts to his name, all with the Cowboys.

Lance saw time in different parts of the game, and overall went four-of-six with an interception. The former 49er added 17 yards on three carries, and his rushing ability gives him a different skill set than Rush as the Cowboys consider their options. Heading into Week 10, it was clear that Rush was the team’s preferred under center; Ultimately, it was no surprise that Lance was included in certain aspects of the game plan.

“Were not that far yet,” head coach Mike McCarthy said at his post-match press conference (video link). “I mean, we had a package for him. We wanted to get him into the flow of the game was the thought process going in here. Then to get him in when we did that, I took him out on third down… I put Cooper back in on that play, on third down, we had the fumble, the turnover there. Something I will of course discuss tomorrow.”

Lance was acquired via trade after the 49ers opted to move on from him and didn’t see playing time last year. However, Prescott’s injury has opened the door for the former No. 3 pick to get a look in the second half of the season, something that would greatly impact his market value. Lance, 24, joins Rush as a pending free agent.

At 3-6 on the year, the Cowboys’ prospects for a postseason berth are becoming increasingly bleak. Once Prescott’s attention turns fully to rehab, the quarterback spot will undoubtedly be largely focused on evaluation to close out the season. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if both Rush and Lance saw notable times, but no decision has been made for Week 11 yet.
