Although the Dallas Cowboys escaped with a 20-15 victory against the New York Giants on Thursday, the big concern for the team right now is Micah Parsons’ ankle injury.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said this on Friday’s episode of Good morning football that the “original diagnosis” was a high ankle sprain for Parsons, but the MRI will shed light on the severity of the injury (starts at 55).

Parsons, who left the game late in the fourth quarter and was taken from the sideline to the locker room, told reporters he has an MRI scheduled for Friday after his x-rays came back negative.

Parsons was one of two key Cowboys defensemen injured during the game. DeMarcus Lawrence did not return after leaving the third quarter with a foot injury, but said afterward that he would be fine. WFAA’s Ed Werder noted that Lawrence will also undergo an MRI on Friday.

The Cowboys have the benefit of two extra days off by playing on Thursday night, so Parsons and Lawrence will get extra time to heal. Their next game is against the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 6.

Parsons is off to a slow start this season under new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. The three-time Pro Bowler has six quarterback hits but just one sack in four games.

Thursday’s win improved the Cowboys’ record to 2-2, although they are still looking to find a rhythm on offense. In an encouraging sign, the run defense rebounded tremendously, allowing just 26 yards four days after giving up a combined 464 yards on the ground over the past two games.
