Cruz Azul beats city rivals Pumas (and more!)

Santos Laguna 0-0 Mazatlan
Puebla 1-0 Chivas
Leon 4-0 Querétaro

Santos Laguna and Mazatlán are both outside the play-offs and neither could help make a last-ditch effort to change their fate after a goalless draw at the Estadio Corona.

Puebla ended a six-match losing streak with a surprise victory over managerless Chivas. The only goal of the match came on the hour mark when Emiliano Gomez scored his third goal of the campaign while on loan from Uruguayan side Boston River. The result leaves Los Rojiblancos in eighth place, while Puebla closes the gap to six points away from the play-off positions.

The final match of the evening was between two teams battling at the bottom of the table, but it was León who could breathe a sigh of relief with an emphatic victory. Los Leones took a one-goal lead at half-time through Angel Estrada, but three goals in the final twenty minutes from Luciano Cabral, Diego Hernández and the legendary Andrés Guardado secured a crucial win as Los Gallos sank to the bottom of the table.

Cougars 0-2 Cruz Azul
Tigres 2-1 Pachuca
Atlas 0-0 Tijuana

The match of the week took place in the capital, where the in-form Pumas hosted city rival Cruz Azul. Angel Sepúlveda created the first twist in the match within the first 60 seconds, giving the leader an early lead. Their impressive start to the match was boosted by a second after twelve minutes when Ignacio Rivero scored his fifth goal of the season. Pumas could no longer find a way in the match and suffered a first defeat in six games. Next up is a visit to Guadalajara, where Chivas will be attacked next weekend.

Tigres managed to respond after two league defeats against city rivals Monterrey and Mazatlán by beating 15th place Pachuca. Juan Brunetta scored his second goal of the season to give the hosts the lead in the first half before Los Tuzos responded less than 10 minutes before the break. Little was able to separate the two in the second half until Jonathan Herrera found the breakthrough in the 78th minute. The fans were left with a nerve-wracking end to the match after Javier Aquino was shown a second yellow card in extra time, but Pachuca could not take advantage.

Atlas played host to Tijuana, with the two sides looking to cement their status in the play-offs. The two sat in 9th and 5th place before kick-off and played out a dull draw, with the Guadalajara side dropping to 10th place, while Los Xolos took a point ahead of Pumas.

Juarez 2-4 San Luis
Necaxa 1-3 Toluca
Club America 2-1 Monterrey

In the city of Juárez, fans were treated to a six-goal thriller, but the result went in favor of the visiting San Luís. The fans took a three-goal lead and feared the worst when Sebastien Lamonge scored a brace and Mateo Klimowicz added a goal himself, but Juárez fought back when Oscar Estupinan himself scored a double. Aiming for a remarkable comeback, all hopes were dashed when Yan Philipe scored the visitors a fourth goal to hand all the points back to San Luís Potosí.

Toluca continued their challenge on Cruz Azul at the top of the table as Jesús Angulo scored a hat-trick before Agustín Palavecino set up a consolation goal for the home side. A result takes them to five games without defeat for Los Diablos Rojos while Necaxa drops to 13th, behind Puebla and León.

The final match of the weekend was a box office affair in the capital as Las Águilas and Los Rayados met at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes. A slow first half was answered with a fast start in the second as Brían Rodríguez put the home side ahead before late drama ensued. Jordi Cortizo gave Monterrey the equalizer in the 87th minute, but the visitors lasted just two minutes as Alvaro Fidalgo hit home to steal all three points for América.
