David Coote: Referee suspended by PGMOL over alleged anti-Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp video

Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended after a video of him allegedly making derogatory comments about Liverpool and the club’s former manager Jurgen Klopp was circulated on social media.

Referee organization PGMOL says the suspension takes effect immediately and is pending a full investigation.

The video, which is widely shared on social media, has not been verified by the BBC. It is unclear when it was filmed or its authenticity.

The 42-year-old Coote refereed Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday. He is one of the Premier League’s most experienced officials and has been refereeing matches in the top level since 2018.

The shared video appears to reference a Premier League match Coote officiated between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which ended 1-1.

Klopp criticized Coote after the match, saying the referee failed to draw fouls due to challenges against Liverpool’s players.

Referees are required to inform PGMOL of the club they are supporting.

Coote, from Nottingham, is registered as a Notts County fan and therefore cannot officiate County or Nottingham Forest matches.

PGMOL says it will make no further comment on the matter until the investigation is completed.
