DeAndre Hopkins Trade to Chiefs: Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes speak

Kansas City Chiefs fans hoping head coach Andy Reid will comment on the team’s trade for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins may have to wait a few days.

Reid’s weekly media appearance on Wednesday took place before the trade was filed with the league, so it wasn’t official. Technically, that would have allowed Reid’s comments about Hopkins to be tampered with.

“(General Manager) (Brett) Veach is dealing with that,” Reid said. “That leaves me speechless.”

Asked for information on whether Hopkins would practice on Wednesday, the head coach playfully doubled down.

“I don’t know anything,” he said.

For what it’s worth, Hopkins was not present during the brief portion of the practice that was available to the media.

Patrick Mahomes’ turn was a little more fruitful.

Once quarterback Patrick Mahomes took the stage, the media approached the subject hypothetical conditions.

For example, what if a card collector entered the building and had to be ready in, say, four days?

“I think the biggest thing is dealing with the coaches,” Mahomes said. “I think our coaches are doing a great job of getting guys up to speed. You’ve seen that all year: bringing guys in, getting them up to speed quickly and then letting them go out (to) make an impact and do what they do best. And so those are things that I think the coaches are doing really well. Then me as quarterback? I just try to stay in line with the guys that are there when I take a photo.

And what if – say, the Chiefs were to bring in a wide receiver who could handle contested catches well – what would his comfort level be with such a target?

“Yeah, I think in my time we’ve had receivers that can make some of those contested catches, and once you build that relationship and build that trust, you put him out there and let your guys go out there and make plays make,” Mahomes replied. “I think that’s what’s special about coach Reid’s offense: it adapts to whoever is in it. He has different ways in which he can use your strengths. And then my job is to go out there and give guys opportunities, give them opportunities to go out there and make plays.

The Chiefs are no strangers to landing a wide receiver in midseason. In 2022, Kansas City traded to the New York Giants for Kadarius Toney – and in 2023, Kansas City traded to the New York Jets for Mecole Hardman.

These circumstances provided Mahomes with a blueprint for how to quickly implicate someone in the crime.

“I think the biggest thing for me is that when a new guy comes into the building, he gets on the same page as quickly as possible,” Mahomes explained. “Even with guys like Kareem (Hunt) at the running back position. Just being able to talk to him on the protection calls, being able to talk to him on the plays, making sure he knows what his job is to do, and then having him go out there and execute it.

“I’ve had to deal with that my whole career, bringing in new guys – that’s part of the NFL. And like I said, I think the coaches are doing a great job of making sure the guys are prepared so they can go out there and have success.
