Dolphins add QB as Tua Tagovailoa battles concussion

The Miami Dolphins are adding another quarterback as starter Tua Tagovailoa struggles with his latest concussion, coach Mike McDaniel said Friday.

Skylar Thompson is projected as the Dolphins’ starter for the time being, while Tagovailoa is sidelined. Tagovailoa left Thursday night’s 31-10 loss to Buffalo in the third quarter with the third known concussion of his NFL career, all of which came in the past 24 months.

“The team and the organization have a lot of confidence in Skylar,” said McDaniel.

McDaniel said the team has not yet made a decision on placing Tagovailoa on the injured list. Tagovailoa was expected at the team’s facility Friday to begin the process of a serious evaluation.

“We just have to operate in the unknown and be prepared for any situation,” McDaniel said, noting that the only opinions that matter to the team are those of Tagovailoa and the medical staff.

McDaniel added that he doesn’t see Tagovailoa playing in Miami’s next game at Seattle on Sept. 22.

“I have no idea and I’m not going to make any decisions right off the bat that I don’t even see myself involved in at the core parts of it,” McDaniel added. “I’m just saying to Tua, everyone is counting on you to be a father, and you’re going to be a father this weekend. And we’ll go from there. There’s not going to be any discussion of where we’re going in that regard … none of that is going to happen without the expertise of doctors and the actual player.”

Tagovailoa was 17-for-25 passing for 145 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions — one of which was returned for a Buffalo score — when he was injured. Thompson completed eight of 14 passes for 80 yards.

Thompson said he feels “fully equipped” to lead the Dolphins’ offense.

“What’s going to happen, who knows? But man, I’m confident,” Thompson said after Thursday’s game. “I feel like I’m ready for whatever comes. I’m going to prepare, work hard and do everything I can to lead this team and do my job.”
