Newly elected US President Donald Trump says he will nominate Fox News host Pete Hegseth as defense secretary, adding a new loyalist to his national security team.

Hegseth, 44, an Army veteran with no government experience, is an unconventional selection to lead the nation’s largest employer, which includes more than 1.3 million active-duty military personnel, 750,000 civilians and more than 811,000 National Guard members and reserve.

“With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice – our military will be great again, and America will never give in again,” Trump said in a statement.

Trump had a fraught relationship with the Pentagon’s civilian and military leaders during his first term, shuffling five defense secretaries in four years.
