Drew Barrymore’s deeply personal interview style found its match in Martha Stewart during an interview today on the actress’ daytime talk show.

Stewart was on hand to promote her new cookbook, and perhaps prompted by the description of a baked goods recipe, Barrymore threw out the question, “What makes you soft and gooey?” Stewart repeated the question, then deadpanned, “Soft and sticky treatment.”

Barrymore — whose interview style has always focused on taking conscious sincerity to, well, soft and gooey extremes — put a hand on Stewart’s shoulder and started rubbing her back, asking, “When you’re treated like a lady.”

But Stewart, predictably, wasn’t upset. She remained hilariously cold and gave the audience a knowing wink before pushing Barrymore away. “You’re the wrong gender,” she joked.

Barrymore then plopped back on the couch and joked, “I know, I know,” as Stewart and the audience laughed. (For what it’s worth, Stewart has been a guest on Barrymore’s show a few times, so it’s hard to imagine the cookbook author was actually shocked or surprised by the treatment.)

In addition to releasing her 100th cookbook, Stewart recently appeared in a new Netflix documentary about her life and career, Marta. Although the film has received good reviews and Stewart participated in the film, she recently expressed her dissatisfaction with everything from the music and camera angles to the story choices during an interview. The New York Times.

Stewart said director RJ Cutler “had full access, and he actually used very little. It was just shocking.” In particular, she called out the final scenes saying she looked like “a lonely old lady walking hunched over in the garden.” Stewart said she told Cutler to cut them, but he refused. “I hate those last scenes,” she said. “Hate them.”
