Drop boxes are valuable to voters in Northeastern Pennsylvania

I worked the polls in Plymouth for several years and always took the time to vote in person for my precinct during my lunch break. However, during this year’s training for poll workers, the instructor suggested considering voting by mail because of the crowds on this Election Day. Following this advice, I requested a ballot online.

Then we learned that all ballots in the 119th District had to be reprinted due to the misspelling of a candidate’s name, which delayed the process. After two weeks, I finally received my ballot on Friday. Given the time constraints, rather than risk returning it, I will personally drop it in a county mailbox to ensure it is counted.

I sympathize with voters in the more remote areas of Luzerne County, where mailboxes are scarce and some have to drive 30 to 45 minutes to access one of the only two boxes available. I expect drop boxes will continue to be a hot topic in the future, but we must recognize how valuable they are to Northeastern Pennsylvania voters who trust their ballots to arrive on time.
