Dustin Hoffman remembers Teri Garr after ‘Tootsie’ co-star’s death

Dustin Hoffman is mourning his late “Tootsie” co-star Teri Garr.

“Teri was brilliant and unique in everything she did, and had a heart of gold,” Hoffman, 87, said in a statement to The Post on Tuesday. “Working with her was one of the biggest highlights. There was no one like her.”

Garr died Tuesday morning in Los Angeles after a long battle with multiple sclerosis, her publicist, Heidi Schaeffer, confirmed to The Post.

The actress is survived by her daughter, Molly O’Neil, 30, and grandson, Tyryn, 6.

Garr played Hoffman’s friend and sometime love interest, Sandy Lester, in the 1982 film “Tootsie.” For her work, she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

“I was proud. Not only did the academy know I existed, they liked me!” Garr wrote about the Academy Award nod in her 2005 memoir, “Speedbumps: Flooring it Through Hollywood.”

Garr explained that she was hesitant to take on a supporting role when she had just starred in the film ‘One From The Heart’ and that director Sydney Pollack convinced her to take the job.

“He said, ‘We’re going to make it funny. It’s going to be really good, and we’ll take any ideas you have,” she recalled. “So I immediately started writing things about her – about Sandy Lester – and he let me do it. And I loved that.”

“Dustin had him beaten into submission, so he said, ‘If you have an idea, tell Sydney,’” she added of Hoffman. “So I said, ‘Put the camera down there,’ and I run out of the bathroom and say, ‘What’s wrong with you guys?’ I’ve been there screaming for half an hour! Doesn’t anyone care?’ That was a good part of the movie, right? And I made that up.”

In addition to the Sydney Pollack classic, the comedy legend was known for her role in Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein.”
