Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson gets mixed reactions for encouraging moviegoers to sing during MOANA 2 screenings

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson once could do no wrong, but these days it doesn’t seem to take much before the pro-wrestler turned actor faces the wrath of social media users.

Maybe it started with his attempt to take over the DCEU Black Adambut whether it’s the #WeWantCody movement earlier this year or the fact that he was mocked for his thoughts about Red and IMAX, The Rock’s star is undoubtedly starting to fade.

This weekend, X has received many complaints about how moviegoers have behaved while attending screenings of Bad. From people taking out their phones to take photos and videos, to people who have recorded themselves breaking into song at various points, there has been a heated debate about what you’re entitled to when you buy a ticket (and whether those people killing theaters).

Now Johnson has received mixed reactions for encouraging people to sing along to Disney Animation’s Moana 2 when it hits theaters this weekend.

“Sing! You paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, you went to a musical, and you love it. Sing,” he told the BBC, giving all those Disney adults free rein to spoil the big screen experience for everyone else by showing off their musical skills this Thanksgiving weekend.

Last week, Ryan Noonan, spokesperson for AMC Theaters, was asked about people singing during Bad and stated, “AMC has long had a policy prohibiting disruptive behavior. The ‘Wicked’ preshow spot (which includes “no singing”) incorporates the film’s themes as a fun, engaging reminder to moviegoers not to spoil the experience for those around them while they are enjoying the show.”

A sing-along version of Bad however, it will be released in theaters on Christmas Day. When star Ariana Grande was asked about singing at regular screenings during the musical’s press tour, she said. “We understand if you (sing). We respect the feelings… but if someone throws popcorn at you, their phone or something, maybe stop.”

In related news, Deadline reports Moana 2 is eyeing a worldwide opening of over $225 million this weekend. That’s not that far away Inside out 2‘s $295 million haul, suggesting the House of Mouse is in for another huge blow.

Breaking down that figure, it looks like $100 million will come from overseas, with a Thanksgiving opening of $125 million – $135 million in North America.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical Moana 2 reunites Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) three years later for an extensive new voyage along with a crew of unlikely seafarers. After Moana receives an unexpected call from her agile ancestors, she must journey to the distant seas of Oceania and dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure she has never experienced before.

The voice cast also includes Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Hualālai Chung, David Fane, Rose Matafeo, Awhimai Fraser, Gerald Ramsey and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, who lends her voice to Moana’s adoring and adorable sister, Simea.

Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27, 2024.
