Early winter storms bring much-needed moisture to the Hudson Valley

We went from a drought scenario to a lot of moisture, all in a matter of days. The storm system that hit the area Thursday with rain, a wintry mix and snow is still a cause for concern through this evening. However, precipitation will decrease as we move through the overnight hours.

But don’t take your eyes off the weather forecast and the roads. Showers will continue into the evening hours and untreated roads will be slippery or even icy. If you have de-icing agents, it is a good idea to use them tonight before you go to bed.

Any additional accumulations will be light and in elevated areas above 150 to 300 meters across much of the region. As the system moves away this evening, drier air will try to seep its way into its center in an effort to reduce the chance of precipitation. There will be some scattered to isolated showers towards daybreak. If trees are weighed down by recent snow, branches could break and fall on power lines, creating the potential for more isolated power outages.

It will also feel cold this weekend. Make sure you prepare as temperatures will feel like they will be in the upper 30s on Saturday and in the low 40s for Sunday.

OVERNIGHT: Mixed showers overnight. There is a chance of light showers before dawn. The strong winds will linger. Expect icy/slippery roads. Lows: low to mid 30s.

SATURDAY: There is a chance of scattered showers early in the day, before 8am. Afterwards there will be a mix of sun and clouds with occasionally windy conditions. Highs: Upper 40. Lows: Upper 30s.

SUNDAY: Mix of sun and clouds and windy. Highs: Upper 40s to lower 50s. Lows: Mid 30s.

MONDAY: A mix of sun and clouds with an occasional weaker breeze. Highs: Low-50s. Lows: Upper 30s to low 40s.

TUESDAY: Partly cloudy with a chance of rain. Highlights: mid-1950s. Low: mid-thirties.
