Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi leave for Great Britain

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi love Montecito.

They do. They like it so much that they have reportedly owned and/or flipped at least 21 properties there. Nevertheless, they leave Santa Barbara County behind.

The ex-Montecitans are now expats following the re-election of a certain ex-president, the Wrap reports. DeGeneres and De Rossi are now home in Great Britain

The pair are voracious homebuyers. They have bought and sold a number of properties in LA, but the Santa Barbara area was a particular favorite.

Site Line, which monitors luxury real estate in those parts, said in February that DeGeneres and De Rossi had spent at least $350 million on mansions in the Santa Barbara area since 2006.

Even extreme flooding could not drive them out of Montecito. DeGeneres posted a video of the rising water behind her home in January 2023, which arrived to mark the five-year anniversary of deadly mudslides in the area.

But apparently taking the reins of the White House again is a disaster of another level for the 66-year-old comedian and her actor wife, 51. Hence the packing up and moving to rural England.

How did they do it so quickly after November 5? The answer, according to TMZ, is that they didn’t. They bought their new home, about two hours outside London, before the election, the site said, and then decided to “get out” after Trump won. Apparently they haven’t even decided how much to ask for their Montecito home yet.

Still, this move could be a powerful one for DeGeneres. She is leaving the US by choice and will not be deported.

“I got kicked out of show business,” she jokes in her Netflix special “For Your Approval,” which premiered on the streaming service in late September. “The ‘Be Nice’ girl wasn’t nice.”

DeGeneres was referring to the controversy that erupted over allegations of a toxic culture on the set of her long-running talk show “Ellen.” She had ended each “Ellen DeGeneres Show” by telling viewers, “Be kind to each other.”

“If I had ended my show by saying, ‘Go ahead,’ people would have been pleasantly surprised to find out that I’m nice.”

During a stand-up set in LA in April, DeGeneres admitted that the scandal had left its mark, according to Rolling Stone. It took “a toll on my ego and my self-esteem,” she said, pointing out the “extremes in this industry” of being idolized or hated.

Perhaps living in the Cotswolds will help DeGeneres heal.

Flipping castles can be therapeutic.
