Elon Musk unveils surprise ‘robovan’ at flashy Tesla event, says Optimus humanoid robots will cost less than a car

Elon Musk unveiled three new high-tech products from Tesla – including a surprising autonomous passenger van – at a highly anticipated event in California on Thursday evening.

Musk rode onto the stage in the highly anticipated self-driving ‘Cybercab’ that Tesla was expected to present during the evening entitled ‘We, Robot’ at Warner Bros. Studio.

But a never-before-seen 20-person “robovan” and Tesla’s latest generation of humanoid robots also made their debut during the unveiling, which at one point was streamed live with more than 3.6 million viewers.

Tesla deployed twenty two-door, fully autonomous ‘Cybercabs’ to drive visitors around the studio, while dozens of its Optimus humanoid robots served drinks and played rock-paper-scissors with guests.

“The autonomous future is here,” Musk said. “We have fifty fully autonomous cars here tonight. You see model Ys and the Cybercab. All without a driver.”

It is striking that the two-door “Cybercab” is supplied without steering wheel, pedals or charging port. The electric vehicle has inductive charging options and gull-wing doors.

“There’s no steering wheel or pedals, so I hope this goes well,” Musk joked on stage.

Tesla’s CEO said the self-driving taxis would be rolled out “before 2027” and would be available for less than $30,000 each and an operating cost of 20 cents per mile.

“We expect the ‘Cybercab’ to be in production… in probably – well, I’m a little optimistic about the time frames – but 2026. Before 2027, let’s put it that way,” said Musk, who has broken promises from previous rollouts dating back to 2020.

His idea for the Cybercabs is to make them available to hail through Tesla’s own app, where owners of the taxis can rent out an entire fleet of self-driving EVs.

But the prototypes unveiled Thursday aren’t road-ready yet, as they still need to be supervised by a real human – much like the self-driving modes available on current Teslas on the market.

“We’re going from full supervised self-driving to full unattended self-driving, where … you can fall asleep and wake up at your destination,” Musk said of the company’s hopes.

Tesla’s autonomous driving technology differs from that of its competitors, who are already operating self-driving robotaxis in certain cities. The technology is more cost-effective in the long term, but experts say it is riskier and will take longer to become operational.

Tesla’s strategy relies solely on a combination of cameras and artificial intelligence to make driving decisions, while competitors like Waymo, Amazon’s Zoox, General Motors’ Cruise and a host of Chinese companies use a similar strategy, plus additional technology like radar , lidar and complex mapping.

The robovans would run on the same technology.

Musk also released the latest generation of Tesla’s Optimus robots, as he tries to shift Tesla’s image from merely a car manufacturer to that of an AI robotics company.

He said he expects the faceless robot helpers to cost less than a $20,000 to $30,000 car, so everyone could own one.

“So what can it do? It will be able to do anything you want it to do,” Musk told the crowd. “So it could be a teacher or babysitting your children. It can walk your dog, mow your lawn, run errands, just be your friend, serve drinks, whatever you can think of, it’s suitable.”

“I think this will be the biggest product ever.”
