Emmanuel Macron wants ‘Emily in Paris’ to leave the Rome storyline behind

The French president promises to ‘fight hard’ to keep the popular Netflix series – in which his wife recently made a cameo – out of Italy

After consecutive seasons of love triangles, miscommunication and outright deception, Emily in Paris finally has a promising plot to move forward with. Emily (Lily Collins) trades her tireless relationship with Chef Gabriel for a whirlwind romance with Marcello, the wealthy Italian beauty who brought her to Rome. She’s also taking on more responsibility at work as she prepares to open the Rome office for Agence Grateau – and she’s even bringing her best friend along. It’s a victory for everyone except Gabriel and apparently French President Emmanuel Macron.

“We will fight hard. And we will ask them to stay in Paris,” Macron said Variety in a recent interview. “Emily in Paris in Rome makes no sense.” The president’s wife, Brigitte, made a cameo during an episode of the recently released fourth season of Emily in Paris. “I was very proud and she really enjoyed doing it. It’s only a few minutes, but I think it was a very good moment for her. I think it is good for the image of France,” he added.

Macron joked that he is “less attractive” than his wife, which prevents him from appearing in the popular Netflix series. But that doesn’t stop him from plotting against Emily’s quest for true love for his own gain. “Emily in Paris is super positive in terms of attractiveness to the country,” he said. “It is a very good initiative for my own company.”

Fortunately for Macron, Emily’s move to Rome doesn’t mean France is completely abandoned – but if the fact that her French has barely improved in four seasons is any indication, she would probably be better off with Italian. When Emily in Paris was renewed for season five in September, creator Darren Star told Netflix TUDUM: “Emily will be present in Rome. It doesn’t mean she won’t be in Paris, but she will be in Rome.”

While Macron holds it for Team Gabriel, Collins herself puts her money on Marcello. “Marcello is a very different adventure that we want for Emily, because ultimately we want Emily to be able to have a better work-life balance,” she told TUDUM. “We want Emily to laugh unconditionally. We want to see her beyond her vacation mode. And it comes at that perfect time.”
