Emmy Awards 2024: Full list of winners

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Shogun” scored historic wins in an epic first season with 18 Emmys, “Hacks” scored a surprise win for best comedy on what was a night that included four trophies for “The Bear,” and “Baby Reindeer” had a vacation in a Emmy Awards with some surprising twists.

“Shogun,” the FX series about power struggles in feudal Japan, won Best Drama Series for its debut, while Hiroyuki Sanada became the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy when he won Best Actor in a Drama and co-star Anna Sawai became the second a few moments later when she won Best Actress.

“’Shogun’ taught me that if we work together, we can create miracles,” Sanada said in his acceptance speech.

Along with 14 Emmys, it is claimed at the predecessor Creative Arts Emmys and a victory for the director on Sunday night, it delivered an unprecedented performance with a total of 18 points for a single season.

“Hacks” was the surprise winner won the award for best comedy series for the first time, surpassing “The Bear,” which most expected after four big wins earlier in the evening.

Jean Smart won her third award for best actress in a comedy for the third season of “Hacks,” in which her stand-up comedian Deborah Vance tries to make it in late-night TV. Smart has won six Emmys in all.

Despite missing out on the night’s top prize after winning it in its first season at the ceremony in January due to a strike, FX’s “The Bear” still managed to win a runner-up award with a big acting performance.

Star Jeremy Allen White won the award for Best Actor in a Comedy for the second year in a row, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach repeated the award for Best Supporting Actor.

In a surprise, Liza Colón-Zayas won the award for Best Supporting Actor, a major competitor.

“How could I have thought it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett,” Colón-Zayas said as tears welled in her eyes as she accepted the award on stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

She is the first Latina to win in this category.

“To all the Latinas watching me,” she said, “keep the faith and vote.”

Netflix’s darkly idiosyncratic “Baby Reindeer” won for best limited series. Creator and star Richard Gadd won for his lead role and screenplay, and Jessica Gunning, who plays his tormentor, won for best supporting actress.

Accepting the award for Best Limited Series, Gadd urged television makers to take risks.

“The one constant in any success on television is good storytelling,” he said. “Good storytelling that is in tune with our times. So take risks, push boundaries. Explore the uncomfortable. Dare to fail to succeed.”

“Baby Reindeer” is based on a one-man play in which Gadd describes being sexually abused and struggling with other emotional issues.

When he accepted the award, he said, “No matter how bad it gets, it always gets better.”

The Associated Press generally does not name people who say they were sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Gadd did.

Jodie Foster won her first Emmy to add to her two Oscars when she won Best Actress in a Limited Series for “True Detective: Night Country.”

The creator of “The Bear” was also a repeat winner. Christopher Storer won his second consecutive Emmy for directing, an award presented by reunited “Happy Days” cast members Ron Howard and Henry Winkler.

White said behind the scenes that he watched Colón-Zayas win and “it was just the best.”

He also called out the two acting wins the show had already achieved last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, when Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Guest Actress in a Comedy for playing his mother, and Jon Bernthal won Best Guest Actor for playing his big brother. “The Bear” won seven times at that ceremony, for a total of 11 for its second season.

The father-son hosts duo Eugene and Dan Levy In their monologue at the beginning of the show they made fun of the very dramatic “The Bear” which falls into the comedy category.

“In honor of ‘The Bear,’ we don’t joke,” Eugene Levy said with a laugh.

The evening lived up to expectations, but also had some setbacks, such as the victory for “Hacks” and a quiet start to the evening for “Shogun”, who only won their first trophy after half of the match.

Elizabeth Debicki won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role as Princess Diana near the end of her life in the sixth and final season of “The Crown.”

“Playing this role, based on this unparalleled, incredible human being, has been my great privilege,” Debicki said. “It’s been a gift.”

Billy Crudup won the award for best actor in a drama for “The Morning Show.”

Streep wasn’t the only Oscar winner to be upstaged by a lesser-known name. Robert Downey Jr., the reigning winner of best supporting actor for “Oppenheimer,” was considered the favorite to win best supporting actor in a limited series for “The Sympathizer,” but that award went to Lamorne Morris for “Fargo.”

“Robert Downey Jr. I have a poster of you in my house!” Morris said from the stage as he accepted his first Emmy.

Several awards were presented by themed teams from television history, including sitcom dads George Lopez, Damon Wayans and Jesse Tyler Ferguson and TV moms Meredith Baxter, Connie Britton and Susan Kelechi Watson.
