England in Pakistan: Jamie Smith’s 89 and late wickets put tourists on top in the deciding Test

Jamie Smith’s fantastic 89 and a trio of late wickets gave England the upper hand on a breathless first day of the third and deciding Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

Smith dragged England to 267 all out before the Pakistani top-flight limped to 73-3, putting the tourists in a favorable position to claim a second successive win in this country.

On a pitch that Pakistan had drained with giant fans and patio heaters, the hosts’ plan was vindicated, thanks in part to some sloppy England batting after the visitors won a crucial toss.

Only Ben Duckett, with 52 points, was unblemished before his dismissal as England fell from 56-0 to 118-6, before Smith’s impressive save.

The wicketkeeper added 105 with Gus Atkinson making 39 as Smith accelerated as he passed 50. He crashed six sixes and was too arrogant in looking for a seventh to be there for tea in the over.

England were dismissed early in the evening, off-spinner Sajid Khan claiming 6-128 to go with his nine wickets in Pakistan’s win in the second Test.

Pakistan used spin exclusively over the 68.2 overs, the longest first innings in Test history without any seam bowling.

England’s total felt little more than even before Shoaib Bashir, Jack Leach and Atkinson each claimed a wicket to leave Pakistan adrift.
