F1 will approve a new team for F1 2026 as General Motors leaves Andretti behind

General Motors could land an F1 spot within weeks after striking a deal with FOM, PlanetF1.com understands.

Andretti and General Motors have been partners since January 2023, but it is now clear that the latter will join the grid as a factory outfit after reaching a deal with Formula One Management (FOM).

Major update to the 11th team’s bid as General Motors reaches an agreement

Andretti’s bid was given the green light by the FIA last season, but was later rejected by FOM due to a number of factors aimed at competitiveness and adding value to the sport.

But even if F1 was against Andretti, there was always more of an open door for General Motors, with F1 keen to attract one of the world’s biggest car manufacturers to the sport.

That effort has now been realized as sources tell PlanetF1.com that a deal has been reached between FOM and General Motors, with participation likely in 2026.

That deal could be announced in the coming weeks, with GM becoming an energy supplier from 2028. PlanetF1.com also understands that GM has been working with F1 for some time in a bid to get on the grid.

F1 was approached to comment officially on the rumors but declined the opportunity to do so.

It remains to be seen whether Andretti will have any involvement in the project, but PlanetF1.com understands that the bid is being led by GM.

General Motors’ breakaway would be a blow to Andretti’s F1 dreams

It’s no secret that the Andretti family, led by Michael Andretti, has been desperate to get onto the F1 grid for a number of years, but if GM pulls away it could be the final nail in their coffin.

It was Andretti who contacted GM, but in doing so they sold the American automaker a dream that they wanted to pursue independently of the racing family.

As for where this latest news leaves Andretti, it’s hard to see a path back for them as they’ve lost perhaps their biggest selling point in the form of a partnership with GM.

At the end of September, Michael Andretti announced that he would step down from his day-to-day leadership at Andretti Global, the team he has led since 2002.

In an open letter, Andretti said it was “a turning of the page” for Andretti Global, but the group has always insisted their F1 goal remained the same.
