Valenzuela made his MLB debut in 1980 but really burst onto the scene a year later, winning the National League Cy Young, Rookie of the Year and making his first All-Star team, conquering Los Angeles in ‘Fernandomania ‘.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela pitches during the eighth inning, setting the professional baseball record for most innings in which he held his earned run average to zero at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 28, 1985.

That 1981 season – in which he also claimed a Silver Slugger – he helped the Dodgers beat the Yankees in the World Series.

He pitched in the major leagues for 17 years, won 173 games and had an ERA of 3.54.

For the past 22 years, he was a Spanish-language broadcaster for the Dodgers.
