Final expected bracket for 12-team playoffs

play

The College Football Playoff is approaching and we got another exciting round of rankings on ESPN on Tuesday night.

There was plenty of intrigue for teams in the higher end of the American LBM Coaches Poll. Last week, the committee handed out farewell wishes to Oregon (No. 1 in the American LBM Coaches Poll), Texas, Miami and BYU. But things have changed now. Now it’s Boise State trailing the Cougars as the fourth-highest ranked projected conference champions, which would earn them a first-round bye.

Elsewhere in the rankings, LSU has completely dropped out, with Army, the lowest-ranked undefeated team in the rankings, slowly creeping up. In the initial CFP rankings, they were ranked No. 25. Now, just two weeks later, they are ranked No. 19. Of course, everything could change drastically for them as they prepare to face No. 6 Notre Dame this Saturday.

Here’s everything you need to know about Tuesday’s CFP rankings and live updates for the latest release.

This season, for the first time, twelve teams will participate in the College Football Playoff. College football introduced the CFP earlier in 2014 with a four-team format. The expansion to 12 teams is planned for the 2024 and 2025 college football seasons. Leaders within the sport have not yet agreed on the framework for the playoffs at this time.

The twelve participating teams in the College Football Playoff round are the five conference champions ranked highest by the CFP Selection Committee, and the next seven highest ranked teams.

The four highest-ranked conference champions are seeded one through four and receive a bye in the first round. The fifth conference champion will be seeded where he was among the top twelve teams, or at number 12 if he is outside the top twelve in the CFP rankings. Non-conference champions ranked in the top four will be seeded starting at No. 5.

“As a result,” the CFP warns on its website, “the placement, 1 through 12, may look different than the final ranking.”

For the first round, the higher-ranked team in each pairing (5 vs. 12, 6 vs. 11, 7 vs. 10, 8 vs. 9) will serve as the on-campus host. The winners will advance to the quarterfinals and match up with the corresponding top-four conference champion based on seeding. Quarterfinals will be played in the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The semifinals – played at the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl Classic – will take place from January 9 to 10.

The two semifinal winners will play for the national championship on January 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. – Mark Giannotto
