Five lessons from Boston College’s win over Syracuse

Yesterday was perhaps the biggest win of the 2024 schedule for Boston College as the Eagles defeated the Syracuse Orange 37-31 thanks to a high-powered rushing attack and dominant play at the line of scrimmage.

A lot can be taken from the win, but chief among them is that Boston College is now just one win away from bowl qualification and guaranteed a .500 finish in the regular season – a big plus for Bill O’Brien and company in their first season and at the helm. Kye Robichaux showed why he is considered the team’s number one when healthy, and that brings up the first point.

Robichaux finished the day with nearly 200 yards on the ground and a pair of scores — good enough to make him the team leader in rushing yards and, of course, touchdowns. Even though Thomas Castellanos has played great football this season, this weekend’s win shows that if Boston College wants to be successful for the rest of the regular season, a healthy Kye Robichaux has to be the straw that stirs the drink.

Sure, being able to swing it around the yard helps, but when you’re at Boston College, it’s just not as necessary as it is for some teams. Thomas Castellanos left the game after the opening drive of the second half, and BC never looked back. James did throw a touchdown in the win, and his 5/6 completion percentage was good enough to allow BC to hold the lead.

Owen McGowan tackles Syracuse Running Back LeQuint Allen

Syracuse has one of the most impressive offensive units in the country, but Boston College still allowed 17 second-half points in the game. Kyle McCord went 31-48 for 392 yards and two scores, so he got to slice and dice the Eagle secondary for most of it. Any game in which two receivers catch for more than 100 yards must be an area of improvement, win, lose or tie.

Donovan Ezeiruaku celebrates a sack against Michigan State earlier this season

Ezeiruaku again finished the match with two tied in sacks. To be honest, at times he is a grown man among boys, and that showed again on Saturday. Not only did the star edge rusher get to Syracuse’s quarterback twice, but he also added a pass deflection to the stat line: a full day in the office for one of BC’s NFL hopefuls.

Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos pitches against Louisville earlier this season.

Castellanos went to the medical tent on Saturday after the opening drive of the second half. His future is still unclear as more information is likely to become available in the coming days. When it comes to Castellanos, this season is the definition of Jekyll and Hyde. The veteran signal caller has had games where he has looked like the best player on the field, but those games have usually been followed by some real stinkers.

One thing is certain if Castellanos continues his starting role with the team: he needs to be more consistent. He’s been bitten by the turnover bug time and time again this season, and with postseason eligibility and validation from the first year of the Bill O’Brien era on the line, the Eagles will sooner or later need more from their star Need a quarterback, assuming he’s healthy, come next week.
