Five winners and losers after pre-season loss to Commanders

LANDOVER, Md. — Here’s a look at the Patriots’ winners and losers after their 20-10 loss in Sunday’s final exhibition game to the Commanders.

Winners

QB Drake Maye: It was against Washington’s junior varsity defense, but it was hard not to be impressed with the rookie, who performed well despite a subpar offensive line. Maye took over for Jacoby Brissett after one series, shook off a bad snap and led the Patriots on their only scoring drive of the first half, an 11-play series that included a 17-yard scramble for a first down. He lost the handle twice (one was a botched center/quarterback exchange), but overall it was a standout start for Maye, who finished 13 of 20 for 126 yards and a touchdown and held the game well into the second half.

WR KJ Osborn: The veteran returned late in the second half and provided a bit of an offensive spark, making a pair of catches for 17 yards in the first two quarters but seeing a 48-yard touchdown reception wiped out by an illegal formation call on left tackle Chukwuma Okorafor.

C Charles Turner: Want a New England offensive lineman who showed some fighting spirit? The rookie from LSU was aggressive in the fourth quarter, going after the Washington defensive front. It wasn’t much, but on a night when the line was struggling, he went above and beyond.

LB Joe Giles-Harris: The 6-foot-1, 240-pound linebacker, who is on the edge of the race for a roster spot, helped his cause with a nice interception midway through the second quarter. (He made five tackles.) Christian Ellis, who is in a similar boat, was also around the ball a lot. (He led the team in tackles with 11.) And Isaiah Bolden nearly had an interception when he jumped down the route on a throw from Trace McSorley early in the second half.

K Chad Ryland: The sophomore kicker, who has been embroiled in a fight with Joey Slye, hit a 38-yard field goal to convert his only extra-point opportunity. (Slye, meanwhile, missed a 64-yard attempt late in the first half.) It may not have been enough to win him the job — Slye was slightly more accurate than Ryland during training camp — but he finished strong.

Losers

OT Chukwuma Okorafor: The left tackle was flagged for illegal formation three times in the first half. (Twice, they were waived.) One time, Maye’s 48-yard touchdown pass to Osborn was overturned. The Patriots have shuffled around a lot at left tackle, especially since Vederian Lowe suffered an oblique injury this month. Whether Okorafor is the answer remains to be seen. (The offensive line was flagged for eight penalties in the first half, four of which were waived.)

C Nick Leverett: Leverett, who got the call to start at center (veteran David Andrews had the night off), delivered a low shotgun snap to Maye on his first drive. There was also a botched center/quarterback exchange, and he was in the thick of the action during the early meltdown up front. Leverett has generally been solid this summer as he climbs the depth chart along the interior, but there’s been a significant drop-off after Andrews.

G Sidy Zaai: The guard stepped on Maye’s foot on one play and hit Layden Robinson on another. The latter led to a scary first-quarter hit on Brissett and likely played a role in the quarterback being sent to the bench shortly thereafter. Sow was knocked out late in the first half with an ankle injury. It was a less-than-stellar night for one of the mainstays of the offensive line this summer.

WR Kayshon Boutte: He flashed occasionally this summer, but he’s on the edge of the depth chart. He battled David Wallis and Kawaan Baker for targets in the second half, but he didn’t catch a catch. Not a good sign for his future in New England. (Can he make the practice squad?)

CB Marcellas Dial: The rookie was whistled for two defensive pass interference calls in the second half for a combined 38 yards. Teammate Azizi Hearn also had a poor finish, getting clobbered by McSorley down the sideline at the end of one play and being flagged for pass interference on the next play.
