Flight departing Boston Logan forced to return to gate due to ‘engine problem’

An “engine problem” on a United flight leaving Boston Logan International Airport on Monday caused a small grass fire on the runway while taxiing, forcing the plane to return to the gate, the airline and the Massachusetts Port Authority said.

United Flight 2136, bound for Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia, was scheduled to depart Boston at 7:10 p.m., according to flight tracking software FlightAware. The unspecified “engine issue” was “immediately addressed” by United’s local ground crew and emergency services, the airline said in a statement.

The Boeing 737-800 had 162 passengers and six crew members on board, according to the airline. No passengers or crew were injured.

The plane did not leave the ground and returned to the gate, where the passengers disembarked, the airline said. Passengers then boarded another plane, which took off around 10 p.m. and landed in Virginia just over an hour later at 11:07 p.m., according to FlightAware.

Winthrop resident Joe Quigley told WCVB he heard “two loud bangs.”

“It was something that made you notice something was happening at the airport,” he told the station.
