Weather forecast for Thursday:

HOUSTON – Rain is upon us for our commute to work and school. Most of the rain will be south of I-10, but a few pop-up storms are possible north of the city.

As we approach 9 a.m., we will see storms moving inland. By 9 a.m., the storms will be strong and moving past the I-10 area and through metro Houston. We may get a break from the rain early in the afternoon, but more storms could develop along the coast later in the day.

Where does this rain come from?

The hot ridge of high pressure that set Texas ablaze last week has moved north into the Midwest, opening a path for a steady stream of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, keeping the potential for daily rainfall throughout the workweek.

This gap between the high pressure area over west Texas and the hot high pressure that is scorching the Midwest and Tennessee Valley is causing plumes of tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to move across the area for most of the week and throughout the long weekend.

Following the tropics:

The tropics are finally showing some signs of life. There is an area we are watching where our next named storm could form. The next name on the list is Francine. The chance is 20% over the next seven days.

10-day forecast:

We have a chance of showers and storms daily throughout the 10-day forecast. This isn’t a total wash out, but instead just scattered showers and storms. This doesn’t mean you should cancel any outdoor Labor Day Weekend plans, but be aware that a few storms could pass through.

If you’re looking for cooler weather, we expect a gradual cooling in the month of September. Our average high temperature drops to 88° by the end of the month. Our average low temperature drops to 67° – thank goodness!

The hottest September we’ve ever had was 109° and the coolest was 45°! That’s a range of 64°! (Copyright 2024 by KPRC Click2Houston – All rights reserved.)

While we expect our temperatures to cool seasonally, the Climate Prediction Center expects most of the United States to be above average throughout the month. As a reminder, our last 100° day was September 27th after Hurricane Rita.
