Former Giants franchise QB signs with Vikings

There’s a new quarterback in the NFC North.

ESPN reported Wednesday that former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones plans to sign with the Minnesota Vikings for the remainder of the season. The move gives the Lions’ top division prospect another experienced option behind Sam Darnold.

Jones became a free agent on Monday after he and the Giants agreed to part ways. The former franchise QB is signing a one-year deal worth $375,000, ESPN reported.

Darnold, who is having a career year, has led the Vikings to a 9-2 record, which is just one game behind the 10-1 Lions. Detroit also reportedly kicked the tires on adding Jones, who was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Jones’ Giants tenure ended with a 22-44-1 record, throwing 70 touchdown passes and 47 interceptions.

For now, Jones will join Minnesota’s practice squad, ESPN reported, behind Darnold and No. 2 Nick Mullens.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell was asked about Jones earlier this week.

“I will say: a lot of respect for Daniel Jones as a player and as a person,” O’Connell said. “I met him years ago during the draft process.”

“I’m sure that Daniel, now that he’s a free agent and there’s probably a lot of interest in him around the league, will make the decision that’s best for him and his future career, and I’m sure he going through that process.” now. … All I can say is that I’ve been a big fan of Daniel for a long time, and I hope that wherever his next step takes him, this is a good opportunity for him.
