Former Lions pass rusher claimed by Browns

The Lions expanded their pass rush last month by trading for Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns.

Now one of their pass rusher castoffs is headed to Cleveland.

The Browns claimed former Lios pass rusher James Houston was cleared for waivers, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Houston was waived by the Lions earlier this week, ending an up-and-down three-season stint with the Lions.

The sixth-round pick was a breakout star in 2022, recording eight sacks in seven games as a rookie, along with 11 quarterback hits.

Last season an injury limited him to just two games, and this year he struggled to get on the field, playing in eight games and seeing just four times in the Lions’ Sunday win over the Colts while switching positions. He recorded just one sack since the 2022 season and had 13 pressures this season.

The addition of Smith gave the Lions additional pass rusher depth following Aidan Hutchinson’s injury, and now their former breakout pass rusher is on his way out.
