‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Wedding’ looks different

Married life will look very different for Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) than it did when they were part of the CBS comedy “Young Sheldon.” It is not the lack of the young scientific protégé that will be the big change. The big difference is that instead of being shot as a movie, “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” – which opens Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. – is filmed in front of a live studio audience.

Executive producer Steven Molaro explains that the reason “Young Sheldon” was a single-camera production was as a way to make it look different from “The Big Bang Theory,” the series that spawned both spinoffs. “Theory” was recorded in front of a studio audience.

“So we had an opportunity here to shake things up and make it a public show,” says Molaro. “We also happened to have a cast that we have a lot of confidence in, who will just shine in front of an audience and feed off that energy.”

Series creator Chuck Lorre is very familiar with the multi-camera format, having used it in productions from “Two and a Half Men” to “Bob Hearts Abishola.” He believes that “George & Mandy” is a family story and that the multi-camera approach can show that better, because it is neither a cinema nor a theater.

One of the reasons the creative team felt confident about the move was the chemistry between Osment and Jordan. Osment was originally hired for just one episode of “Young Sheldon,” but the team liked her work so much that she became a regular and now one of the stars of the spinoff.

The addition of Osment’s character changed the director’s mind for how Jordan would play Georgie as he became involved with an older woman. His character matured quickly, a change he embraced.

“It’s good to see him grow up and become the man of the household, and I think we’re going to see a lot of that in this,” Jordan says. “It’s hard for a lot of young parents, and I think it might help a few people to watch a show like this and deal with it a little bit, but I think it’ll be good to see him grow. become more of a man than he is now.”

One thing that helps Jordan understand how to play a new dad is that he became a father for the first time just a few months before the new series started. That’s a plus considering the Texas native came to “Young Sheldon” with only a few professional acting credits, including the Netflix film “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter.”

“Because he was traveling around, living at home, and 18 years old, this roadblock basically came into his life, and it kind of made him take a step further,” Osment says of the changes they made in Jordan’s saw character. “I think this proves that they’re a really good team together because they get on each other’s nerves, and she tries to pull him along sometimes, but she’s older.

“And what a gift to be able to help someone grow into adulthood and help them achieve motherhood. I think it’s a beautiful story.”

Osment is the exact opposite of Jordan, as she brings decades of experience to the role. Her credits include ‘The Kominsky Method’, ‘Mom’, ‘Pretty Smart’ and DeadEndia. She also starred in the FOX drama series “Almost Family” and the Freeform comedy series “Young & Hungry.”

Both actors face added pressure with “Georgie & Mandy” as they launch the latest sequel in a franchise that has seen a pair of series become big hits. Osment feels no pressure, but sees it as a gift to be part of the franchise.

She says, “I feel like we’re set up to hit a home run.” I’m just grateful every day that I get to wake up and do what I love. And for me, it’s not necessarily the macro of it. It’s every day I get to wake up and spend time with people who are so amazing, and I get to make people laugh.

“And it gives me satisfaction every day that I can do that. So if I give my best every day, I just have to trust that the end result will be good.”

The magnitude of the launch only became clear to Jordan when his girlfriend pointed out that his name is tied to one of the biggest new shows to hit the market. His approach to the new series is to just “go with the flow.”

Those helping with the flow include Rachel Bay Jones, Will Sasso, Dougie Baldwin and Jessie Prez. New episodes will be available the next day on the Paramount+ streaming service.
