Gun violence erupts along West Indian Day Parade route in Brooklyn

Five people were shot along the route of the West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn on Monday, New York police confirmed.

There is no information yet about any injuries.

The shooting happened at 307 Eastern Parkway at 2:35 p.m. and the investigation is ongoing, police said. The NYPD has scheduled a briefing outside the Brooklyn Museum at 4 p.m.

Earlier in the day, some attendees expressed concerns about gun violence after previous years’ festivities were marred by violence.

Marie Clarke, 58, a Brooklyn resident dressed in green and yellow for the Jamaican flag, says she has noticed that the crowds – while still significant – have diminished in recent years.

“There were more trucks and it was more crowded,” Clarke said, adding that she worried that fear of gun violence was keeping people away.

“I think it’s because of the crime,” Clarke said. “We need to come together and live in peace and harmony. And stop the violence. Stop killing each other. Put the guns away. There are too many guns in this place.”
