Halloween weather: Trick-or-treaters could see record high temperatures in Central NY

Syracuse, NY – Kids won’t have to wear heavy coats over their costumes to trick-or-treat in Central New York this year.

The high temperature on Thursday is expected to be 78 degrees, which would easily beat the Halloween record of 75 degrees. That record was set in 2003.

At 6 p.m., when children take to the streets, temperatures will still be in the low 70s, the National Weather Service said.

“With such significant warming expected during the day, conditions will still be mild for candy collecting in the evening hours,” the weather service said. “Conditions will be breezy and localized showers may develop ahead of an approaching cold front.”

Wind gusts could reach up to 20 mph during trick-or-treating hours, but any lingering rain should hold off until after midnight, the weather service said.

After a seasonally high temperature today of around 55 degrees, Syracuse will see rapid warming through Thursday. Expect a high of 63 on Tuesday and 77 on Wednesday. That will be close to the October 1946 record of 79.

Thursday’s high could be nearly 25 degrees above the normal level of 54.

Even a 70-degree day on Halloween is a rarity: It has happened only six times in the 122 years that official records have been kept.

The cold front moving through Halloween night will push high temperatures back into the mid-50s, typical for the first few days of November.
